Peggy Sue - 'Vices'

7/10

Throughout their earliest years, Peggy Sue were a group always on the lookout to find something new and inspiring to get them motivated. Their first three collections were a delightful smorgasbord of abstract indie influences and adventurous songwriting that led them to become one of the UK's most beloved cult outfits. But after a turbulent few years, it looked like the band were falling apart and no longer able to continue. So with six years away to redefine themselves, remaining members Katy Young and Rosa Slade take things right back to the beginning as they deliver 'Vices', a stripped-back collection of woozy and breezy lo-fi listens.

While 'Vices' is intended to be a callback to the group's first few years on the circuit, it is also representative of their inspirations as well. From the very start, this new record looks to take notes from the 90s aesthetic as notable sounds of Pavement, The Breeders, and Sonic Youth can be heard throughout this new full-length. In all, this seems to give 'Vices' a recognisable sound that we can all get on board with, but also sees Peggy Sue take on yet another new direction for their catalog, unveiling a bright and progressive style that shows them in a far happier and more confident guise.

Despite only being the two members left now, the band have managed to create a record that is filled with a rich and woozy atmosphere, delivering a bright and enjoyable new collection from start to finish. 'Vices' has an instant charm about it that is simply too hard to ignore, showing their fans that a six-year break was well worth the wait.
