Turbowolf - 'The Free Life'

6/10

After releasing their much-loved sophomore album 'Two Hands' back in 2015, Bristol-based outfit Turbowolf found themselves hitting a whole new level of success. That release brought them a huge wave of popularity and saw them become one of the country's biggest cult names. Now returning with their third full-length 'The Free Life', the psych-rockers seem to have made some new friends as this record sees them get collaboration-happy.

With guest names such as Joe Talbot of fellow hometown band Idles, Sebastian Grainger of Death From Above, and Royal Blood's Mike Kerr just some of the artists making appearances on this release, 'The Free Life' seems to act like a melting pot of new ideas for the band. While the sound and direction of the record remains largely cohesive, the idea of having all these guests seems to act as more of a gimmick than anything progressive, while the flow of the record never really gets going.

But regardless, 'The Free Life' is still plenty of fun to listen to, with tracks like 'Cheap Magic', 'Very Bad' and 'Domino' proving to be the real highlights. The idea of a collaborative rock album does sound appealing but when the guests make little to no difference on each track, it does sometimes feel like a wasted opportunity.
