The Wainwright Sisters - 'Songs In The Dark'

7/10

While the Wainwright family is steeped in musical history, the various siblings have never been ones to shy away from collaborations. But this is the first time that half sisters Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright-Roche have worked together to produce an album. Made up of songs that shaped their childhoods, including lullabies penned by their mothers and father Loudon Wainwright III, 'Songs In The Dark' is a humble and blissful release from start to finish.

With just their guitars and voices, The Wainwright Sisters have managed to create a cohesive release that fuses their own respective sounds into a direction that is simply awe-inspiring. The beauty and elegance of their paired vocals is the clear focus of this record as they deliver powerfully well-written songs that seem to take on their own life and paint a rose-coloured picture of what their respective childhoods were actually like.

It is certainly a well produced concept album with all the hallmarks of what you would expect from two Wainwrights in the mix. And while its single tracked narrative may tire from time to time, it is a record that could find yourself picking up over and over again.
