DZ Deathdays - 'Positive Rising, Part 2'

7/10

After first breaking onto the scene with their cult-appreciated debut album 'Bloodstreams' in 2012, Australia's DZ Deathrays have developed in both direction and membership since then. Officially making themselves a trio with the introduction of second guitarist Lachlan Ewbank in 2018, the outfit have begun to explore more textured and brooding aesthetics, moving further away from the blistering and frantic energy of their initial years. And after a successful bout in 2019 with their fourth full-length 'Positive Rising, Part 1', they return to deliver the equally impressive sequel.

Originally announced at the very start of the year, the lead up to 'Positive Rising, Part 2' has been one of the longest we've experienced as the group delivered one enticing cut after another, whetting our appetite every step of the way. Now that the record is finally with us, we can truly appreciated the bold and vibrant flavour this new incarnation of the group has produced. Following much of their usual formula of soaring guitar hooks and pounding production, their fifth full-length continues that strong and enigmatic direction they have forged for themselves, and continues their pursuit of broad and vivid alt-rock.

It may not have the same instant appeal as some of their previous work, but 'Positive Rising, Part 2' remains a firm continuation of their sound to date. DZ Deathrays may not have reached the international recognition some of their fellow countrymen have in recent years, but they are still a vital part of Australia's seminal music scene.
