Editors' Tom Smith announces debut solo album 'There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light'

After two decades as the brooding voice behind Editors and one-half of Smith & Burrows, Tom Smith is finally striking out on his own. His debut solo album 'There Is Nothing In The Dark Which Isn’t There In The Light' arrives on the 5th December via Play It Again Sam, and it promises to reveal a more intimate, stripped-back version of the artist we thought we knew.

The new single 'Life Is For Living' is a sweeping, cinematic standout, imbued with optimism and underscored by quiet strength. Co-written and produced with Iain Archer, the track captures the heart of the album’s ethos. “‘Life is for living, any way you want… live it ‘til it’s gone,’” Smith sings, a mantra wrapped in warmth and clarity, far from the icy tension of his Editors work.

Born from a desire to return to his acoustic roots, the album sees Smith setting aside the band dynamic to explore personal themes with raw honesty and delicate sonic flourishes. While the collaboration with long-time creative partner Andy Burrows was shelved early on, his partnership with Archer unearthed a new synergy that helped shape the album’s emotional core.

Tracks like 'Lights of New York City' glow with nostalgic ache, while 'Broken Time' and 'Saturday' reveal the quieter, more vulnerable corners of Smith’s songwriting. Elsewhere, 'Northern Line' and 'How Many Times' tread the fine line between reflection and regret.
