Forgotten Garden return with new single 'Rain'

There is a restrained elegance to Forgotten Garden's 'Rain' that explores the emotional aftermath of a relationship’s collapse with patience and sensitivity. Drawing from the traditions of post-punk and atmospheric indie-rock, the Scottish-Portuguese project delivers a track that feels both intimate and quietly expansive in equal measure.

At its core, 'Rain' is a reflection on the delayed impact of heartbreak. The song centres on someone who initially believes they can move forward unscathed, only to find themselves gradually overwhelmed by the emotional consequences of loss. The recurring rain imagery serves as an effective metaphor, representing the creeping nature of depression; something that arrives slowly and settles in without warning.

Musically, the track is built on a strong foundation. Mel D’s bass performance provides a steady emotional anchor, carrying much of the song’s momentum while allowing the surrounding instrumentation room to breathe. Above it, Danny’s melodic guitar work and understated synthesiser textures create a shadowy backdrop that feels reflective throughout. The arrangement never becomes overcrowded, allowing each element to contribute to the song’s atmosphere with purpose and restraint.

The real focal point, however, is the vocal performance from Inês Rebelo. Her delivery captures the song’s emotional complexity beautifully. In the verses, she conveys vulnerability through subtle phrasing and controlled emotion, while the choruses introduce a greater sense of longing and uncertainty.

The influence of bands such as The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths is evident throughout, particularly in the interplay between melodic guitar lines and darker emotional themes. Yet, Forgotten Garden merely draw from these inspirations while maintaining a distinct identity shaped by Rebelo’s vocal style and the duo’s collaborative songwriting approach.

In all, 'Rain' is a thoughtful and atmospheric piece of songwriting that showcases Forgotten Garden’s strengths as creators of emotionally resonant music. It may be steeped in sadness, but it is also rich in melody, texture, and feeling, offering us a beautifully realised meditation on loss and resilience.
