Gwenno - 'Tresor'

7/10

As far as niches go, Gwenno's adoption of the Cornish and Welsh language within her music has been one rarely adopted into a more mainstream arena. With her previous two full-lengths, 2014’s Welsh language speaking 'Y Dydd Olaf' and the 2018 follow-up 'Le Kov', sung entirely in Cornish, she is pioneering the revival of this seldom spoken dialects through a lens of sweet and sweeping psych-pop influences. And with so much admiration for her work to date, she now returns with her eagerly-awaited third studio album 'Tresor', a record that sees her continue that vibrant direction.

Opting for another Cornish-focus to her lyrics, 'Tresor' continues to conjure up imagery of wistful folk atmospheres within its psychedelic textures. Throughout this new collection, we are treated to Celtic-inspired tones that really give a sense of the vast and natural beauty that these lands are known for. Amongst the sprawling warmth within each track, she adopts a diverse array of instrumentation, and even the occasional household appliance, to create this magical and alluring world that we voyeuristically experience despite being completely ignorant of her lyrical content.

Gwenno has once again shown us a beautifully captivating side to these otherworldly areas of the British Isles, with 'Tresor' standing as one of the more dynamic releases. Proving to be more adventurous and diverse than earlier releases, she feels far more at home within this chosen guise, and a more explorative soul as a result.
