The Mysterines - 'Reeling'

7/10

Over the last few years, we have begun to see fewer and fewer UK rock acts break through into the wider mainstream. Usually overshadowed by their US counterparts, the British wing of the scene has seldom found a name to hold a candle to the North American juggernauts, especially if the band themselves have only just begun their journey. But after a couple of years of buzz, Liverpool-based outfit The Mysterines have been able to capture the broader imagination of alt-rock fans, and now deliver their long-awaited debut album 'Reeling', a record that looks to cement themselves as the next big thing.

While they are pretty formulaic in the direction in which they take, there is this undeniable energy that they bring to their sound. From the very beginning, 'Reeling' runs out of the gates with a raw and blistering vigour that rarely lets up across its thirteen-track length. Channelling a strong influence from the 90s grunge-rock era and refining it for a modern ear, The Mysterines are on a mission to not only bring the UK guise back into people's minds, but also reinvent the genre with a flurry of exciting and powerful offerings that rarely seem to falter throughout.

Things may still be in their infancy for the group, but is clear that they have bold ambitions with this release. A fresh and solid introduction to what they are capable of, 'Reeling' is a rare and inventive release that only builds upon the acclaim they have garnered in the last few years.
