Dublin-based alternative rock trio Nova Dream make their debut with ‘The Ideal Start’, a four-track EP that blends grunge-heavy guitars with the melodic hooks of indie and alternative rock. For a debut EP, the title is a fitting one, even if Nova Dream have a more ironic take on what an ideal beginning looks like. Opener ‘El Matador’ wastes little time setting the tone, launching into heavy walls of guitars and a driving alt-rock sound that makes an immediate impression. There’s a grunge edge to the track, balanced by an infectious energy that gives the EP an accessible, hook-driven feel.
That momentum carries through the four tracks, with Nova Dream showing enough variety to keep things interesting. ‘Playing God’ brings bluesier influences into the mix, offering a different flavour to the band's guitar-led sound, while ‘Open Wide’ adds another dimension to the record before closer ‘It Means Nothing’ rounds things off. Each song has its own character, but the band's love of loud guitars and punchy alternative rock ties everything together.
Beneath the distortion, there’s a darker thread running through ‘The Ideal Start’, with themes of anxiety, disillusionment and the struggle to find your place in the world informing the record. Rather than dragging the mood down, however, Nova Dream channel that tension into music that feels lively and direct. The contrast between the heavier subject matter and the sheer energy of the performances gives the EP much of its appeal, keeping things firmly on the side of cathartic release rather than wallowing in misery.
At just four tracks, ‘The Ideal Start’ leaves room for the band to develop their sound further, but it offers a solid introduction to what they do well. Nova Dream demonstrate a good instinct for balancing weight and melody, delivering a debut that should appeal to listeners drawn to the more energetic side of modern indie and alternative rock. The title might be ironic, but as first impressions go, this is a promising start.
