Soft Cuff - 'Thick Heat'

8/10

Soft Cuff have always sounded like a band more interested in possibility than boundaries, and 'Thick Heat' pushes that instinct into its most complete form yet. The Floridian five-piece use their debut full-length to stretch outward from their psych-groove foundations, pulling funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and cinematic rock into a record that feels loose, playful and remarkably assured.

There's this real sense of movement across the album. Instead of just settling into one familiar pocket, Soft Cuff keep shifting the scenery around us, allowing grooves to deepen, guitars to wander and percussion to reshape the atmosphere from track to track.

Previously shared single ‘Scorsese’s Dream’ has the restless momentum of a chase sequence, with its rhythm section driving the track forward while the surrounding instrumentation adds tension and colour. While ‘Rudy’ offers a different angle, leaning into a more riff-heavy psychedelic character with flashes of reggae and a distinctly old-school sense of space. It's a strongreminder that Soft Cuff can sound relaxed without losing detail.

There are clear parallels with acts such as Menahan Street Band, Surprise Chef, Khruangbin and BADBADNOTGOOD, but Soft Cuff's chemistry gives the record its own personality, particularly in the way every instrument appears to have room to breathe without losing the collective pulse.

For a debut album, 'Thick Heat 'feels impressively settled. Adventurous without becoming self-indulgent, and rich in texture without losing its immediacy, it captures Soft Cuff sounding increasingly comfortable with just how wide their musical world can become. This is a band with plenty of routes left to explore, and that sense of open-ended potential makes this initial collection especially exciting.
