Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders - 'Get The Money'

5/10

Unless you are familiar with seeing the Foo Fighters live, the idea of their drummer Taylor Hawkins fronting his own band would come as quite a surprise. But as many know, he regularly steps out from behind the kit to perform a number of tracks during their performances and in another reality, would probably have been the singer in his own group if Dave Grohl never hired him to join his latest venture. But while his seldom-seen side project Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders have been on hiatus since 2010, he has obviously been feeling the urge once again as he returns with a star-studded third full-length 'Get The Money', a record that feels more like a jam session than a fully realised album.

With its notable list of collaborators including Dave Grohl, Queen drummer Roger Taylor, Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell and even LeAnn Rimes all playing a small part on this new collection, it has this very laid-back and enjoyable quirk running through it, as if it is more about having fun making music rather than simply putting out another serious rock record. Yet while it clearly has a charm and feels much like a group of mates banding together to make a record, it has this very forgettable aesthetic that fails to separate it from almost anything else doing the rounds at the moment.

Taylor Hawkins is no doubt a serious talent as a frontman in his own right and regularly holds his own at the centre of this new release, but it just doesn't have much going for it apart from its hefty guest appearances. Rock music by numbers in its delivery, it has a light and enjoyable personality but not one you'll find yourself coming back to after an initial listen.
