Broken Spaceship - 'A Part With Some Significance'

8/10

Some debuts feel like statements; others feel like transmissions from another dimension. Broken Spaceship’s 'A Part With Some Significance' is both. The London duo warp post-punk, hip-hop, and industrial electronics into something jagged yet magnetic, music that feels like a fever-dream broadcast from a paranoid future.

The opening track 'Dreams' sets the tone with its relentless delivery, walking the line between rap and spoken word, its imagery splintered and claustrophobic. 'Ghost' follows with cold, metallic textures that nod to ‘80s synth dystopias, while 'Rotten Teeth' drills into the skull with bass that’s less rhythm and more seismic event. Closing track 'Endless Puzzle' offers the slightest glimmer of light, though its brightness feels fractured, as if even hope here has to fight its way through static.

But what makes the EP remarkable is its cohesion. Each track slots into place like a shard in a broken mirror, reflecting different angles of the same unsettling vision. There’s a social conscience at work too, lyrics that gnaw at systems, paranoia that feels earned, and an unease that mirrors the present moment all too well.

For an initial release, 'A Part With Some Significance' is daring in scope and sharp in execution. Broken Spaceship are crashing onto it, scattering sparks and leaving you unsure whether to dance, reflect, or duck for cover. Either way, you’re paying attention.
