Death From Above - 'Outrage! Is Now'

6/10

Most fans of the Canadian rock duo Death From Above will be well aware of the wait they suffered between the first to second album. Their incredible era-defining debut 'You're A Woman, I'm A Machine' made them an instant hit around the world when it landed in 2004, but their equally ferocious follow-up 'The Physical World' wasn't released until 2014, a full decade later. Thankfully, we haven't had to wait as long for their third full-length 'Outrage! Is Now', but from the initial listen, it could have done with more time in the oven.

Originally called Death From Above 1979, the band dropped the year from their moniker for this release, and it seems they may have lost a lot of their energy in the process. While its lead singles 'Freeze Me' and 'Never Swim Alone' may have led many to believe that their unique and brash sound was still very much alive, the album as a whole paints a very different view. Filled with more strung-out cuts than many would have liked and the occasional MSTRKRFT-influenced track leave little to remember from this new release.

Fans will probably still find something to like on here, but it just doesn't have the same magic that even after a decade away, their sophomore album was able to rekindle. It certainly seems that genius doesn't come as easy to these two as we assumed, and should maybe give it another ten years before we get another release.
