Liana Warren - 'For Now, Forever'

8/10

Some records invite you to lean forward rather than turn the volume up. Bay Area songwriter Liana Warren understands that power instinctively, and her first full-length proves it. 'For Now, Forever' glides through ten vignettes with the delicacy of a journal entry yet the compositional confidence of a veteran.

She eases us in with 'Tiny Sprout (It Begins)', a pastoral prelude built on spider-silk finger-picking and almost-heard harmonies. Step through and you find 'Twin Peaks', a gentle ode to found-family nights and late-city skies as Warren’s voice hovers just above the guitar line, soft but unmistakably present.

What sets her apart is her refusal to tidy up the emotional loose ends. 'Cleo’s Bath' acknowledges loss without chasing catharsis, letting a single cello sigh against restrained percussion. While 'The Apple Tree' manages a similar balancing act with grief and gratitude sharing the same breath, neither eclipsing the other.

The closing tune 'Adaline' returns to candle-flame intimacy, offering no grand epilogue, just the suggestion that life keeps whispering even after the music stops. It’s a perfect exit: unresolved in the best sense.

Warren’s guitar work is meticulous but never showy; her lyrics read like underlined margins in a favourite novel. The entire record may clock in just over forty minutes, yet it leaves the kind of afterglow that stretches far beyond its runtime. 'For Now, Forever' simply waits for you to slow down, and when you do, it rewards with stories told in half-smiles, long pauses, and the spaces between chords. An understated debut, but also a quietly stunning reminder that intimacy can feel vast.
